If you've ever thought Realtors live in perfectly maintained homes where nothing ever breaks... let me let you in on a little secret.
We don't.
In fact, the last couple of weeks at the Hutch house have been a perfect reminder that owning a home is an adventure.
It all started during one of the hottest stretches of the summer when our air conditioner decided it had perfect timing... and quit. Twenty-four hours without A/C during a heat wave is enough to make anyone appreciate cool air in a whole new way.
Just as we got that behind us, we discovered water in our basement after heavy rain. Your mind immediately jumps to the worst-case scenario…foundation problems, leaking walls, expensive repairs. Thankfully, after a little detective work, we found the culprit: a bird had built a nest in one of our gutters, preventing water from draining properly. Once the blockage was cleared, the problem was solved.
Then came this week's project.
We decided to replace one of our outdoor hose faucets. It should have been a quick, straightforward job. Instead, we couldn't get the fitting loose no matter what we tried. It felt completely seized up.
After more frustration than we'd like to admit, we finally discovered the manufacturer had used a reverse-threaded retaining nut. Instead of "lefty loosey," it was exactly the opposite.
Sometimes the problem isn't that something is broken. Sometimes it's simply built differently than you expected.
It made me think about homeownership.
No matter how well a home has been maintained, something will eventually need attention. Furnaces quit. Appliances wear out. Gutters clog. Plumbing surprises you. Roofs age. That's not a sign you bought the wrong house.
That's just life in a home.
The truth is that homeownership isn't about never having problems. It's about learning your home, maintaining it, and solving one project at a time. Every homeowner, whether they've lived there six months or thirty years, has stories just like these.
The good news?
Most problems have a solution. Some are simple fixes. Some require a professional. A few become funny stories you laugh about later.
And honestly, those experiences become part of your home's story.
As real estate professionals, Kris and I spend a lot of time helping clients buy and sell homes. But we're homeowners first. We know what it's like to troubleshoot unexpected issues, make repairs on weekends, and wonder, "What in the world were they thinking?"
That's real life.
So, if your home has thrown you a curveball lately, you're in good company. Take a deep breath, tackle one project at a time, and remember, no house is perfect.
It's simply home.
Have you had a recent homeownership surprise? We'd love to hear your story. Sometimes the best homeowner tips come from sharing the lessons we've learned along the way.
